The mobility sector is facing radical change, as we redifine mobility in terms of safety and sustainability. This is an exciting time in which many organisations develop new solutions that incorporate the latest technology. Today we talk to Ingo Diettele, CEO of Hybrid Lidar Systems. The Startup of the Week has developed exciting solutions to meet the needs of the modern transport system.

Hello Ingo! We’re glad you’re here today. Can you give us an insight into the German transport system and current developments? What role does your startup play in it?

Germany has one of the densest road and rail networks in the world. In this context, safety-relevant requirements of all types of mobility are essential areas of consideration for the industries involved. Among other things, autonomous mobility plays an important role in current discussions.

Mobility and safety have thus entered into an inseparable symbiosis. Sensors that take over the functions of the human eye and our experiential knowledge are indispensable for making autonomous driving possible. Research is increasingly focusing on LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) sensors. These sensors are not ready yet to enter the mass market, but due to their characteristics they represent a potential solution for nationwide, fully automated driving that meets safety standards.

Our project focuses on the research and (further) development of LiDAR sensors and their applications, concentrating on a completely new approach. The decisive factor was the invention of an innovative measuring method. This allows data acquisition using novel digital signal processing algorithms with a very low computational effort.

A vehicle optimally equipped for traffic has to meet various industrial requirements. The currently available advanced technology offers partly precise and expensive solutions. With our product LiSSA (LiDAR for Smart Sensing and Automotive) we present a unique approach that meets and even exceeds the requirements. Due to the low computational effort, the innovation can be offered reliably and cost-effectively. With our hybrid process, in addition to high resolution (double VGA), a high degree of accuracy (<1 cm), a guaranteed laser safety class 1 (eye-safe), and a range of more than 200 meters are possible.

The combination of several novel approaches enables better object classification, which is a crucial safety factor for the movement of autonomous vehicles in a dynamic environment.

How exactly do your sensors work?

With our LiSSA Automotive it is possible to generate a high-resolution LiDAR image to detect objects. The software algorithms make it possible to change parameters that were previously firmly anchored in the chip. By using our multiplexing approach it is possible to drastically increase the usable chip area and thus to generate a high-resolution image. In addition, we are currently working on further novel components and can thus optimize the resolution in the future. The goal is to equip every moving object in road traffic with our LiDAR sensor technology so that we can raise traffic to a new level of security!

The high-resolution data that we provide with the help of our sensor is available for further processing both inside and outside the vehicle. LiDAR sensors are indispensable for further linking of the vehicle. Among others in the fields of logistics, consumer electronics (smartphones/tablets), augmented reality or even wind power and drones: Wherever a machine must or should be able to “see”, you need a LiDAR sensor.

You have already presented many unique values of the LiDAR sensor technology, can you go into more detail about the most important USP of your solution?

As already mentioned, we offer a significantly higher resolution with our product: This is done by our signal processing algorithm, which also drastically increases the usable chip area. In addition, an innovative multi-spectral approach is part of the project – this allows several areas of the environment being simultaneously, resulting in a faster and higher resolution environment detection.

Is your innovation already usable?

Not yet. Currently the Hybrid Lidar Systems is mainly in the research and development process. In our laboratory we are manufacturing the first LiDAR sensors in manual work with prototype components. We are active in the field of optoelectronics, as well as hardware and software programming and act as a design center.

Within the next two years we aim to revolutionize autonomous mobility using LiDAR sensors. The long-term, overriding goal is to use our sensor to provide the basis for safe and cost-efficient mobility for the mass market.

I see. In which industries is your product at home? Only the automotive industry?

Not quite. The main target group is the international automotive industry, yes. However, we have also established numerous contacts with other industries that require the advantages of LiDAR sensors. The “seeing” is an elementary property that is needed in many sectors (logistics, industry, wind energy, health care & sports, traffic & mobility) to take products to a new (safety) level.

You mentioned earlier that you are still in the research phase. What is the next big milestone for you?

We have been pursuing our goals since the end of 2018, the founding of the company. At the end of Q4 this year, Q1/2021 we plan to book our first automotive project. Our industrial product LiSSA Industry is already available for order and will be delivered to the first customer in the logistics sector at the end of this year.

We continued as our previous (brand) name “Energieloft” was also put to the test, and with it our entire corporate design. It took several months to develop, adapt and redesign it. We were happy to officially announce our rebranding on October 1, 2019. Event highlights and successful projects in 2019

Of course, we did not only deal with our design and our platform during the year. In addition to the new strategic direction and positioning, we haven’t lost sight of our “daily business”. Filtered from our business repertoire, we would like to present you some selected event and project highlights from the past financial year, which we implemented together with customers and partners.

 

Startup Speed-Datings 2019

A central core element, which on the one hand is part of our digital innovation system, but on the other hand takes place analogously, are our Startup Speed-Datings. For this we traveled across Germany last year and even came to Paris in autumn. With our speed dating we bring startups together with established companies and investors.

In a very effective way, in short 8-minute dates, the participants who have previously registered on the web pages can be connected according to their wishes, interests and cooperation requests. To do this, we use an intelligent algorithm that, based on the entered data, selects the most interesting conversation partners.

At the following events in 2019, we organized our startup speed dating and matched a total of more than 700 participants at around 2,800 matches.

Startup Challenges 2019

While our startup speed dating focuses on providing the participants with the right business contacts for innovation projects, our startup challenges are competitions at the push of a button. The startup challenges are also a central component of our B2B innovation network. They enable startups to participate in a targeted manner.

At the same time, established companies can advance their innovation projects and look for cooperation partners from the startup ecosystem. This results in a win-win for both sides. After all, startups rarely have their own established customer networks that have grown over many years. They also often lack the relevant experience on the market. Despite this, they often bring a lot of fresh know-how, new technologies, courage and willingness to take risks – in other words, the so-called “entrepreneurial spirit” that is needed to implement innovation projects.

Our team grew from 18 at the beginning of the year to 28 team members at the end of the year. Together we spent a team week in the Eifel and let the year end with a cozy Christmas party.

Together with our cooperation partner energate GmbH, we published the trend radar for the energy industry blue oceans – a new trend report on important energy trends. The first report was focused on smart building solutions and was presented at E-world 2019 in February. A second industry report followed last summer on the topic of smart mobility services.

We started with new social media formats to let you participate in the current Innoloft events. Our follower numbers are developing positively and our social media community is growing happily. You can find us on the following channels: Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Youtube and Linkedin.

We started our first collaborations and projects in Asia in 2019 and are continuing to work with our white label innovation platforms, which we have also relaunched.

Last but not least … At the end of the year we were very pleased that Gründerszene Awards had chosen us as one of the fastest growing startups in the area of digital business models. After all, we made it into 21st place in Germany with our startup in the TOP 50 and became industry winners in the energy sector. Parametricos is the startup of week 48: web-based visualization application for the construction industry

The construction market is booming. As the world population continues to grow, space must be created for living and working. In big cities, one construction project follows another and the architects, engineers and site managers are very busy. Our startup of the week, Parametricos, has developed software that makes life easier for AECs through BIM data and general workflow improvement. Today we talk to Marios Messios, CEO of Parametricos, to learn more about the startup.

Hello Marios! Thanks for taking the time today! Would you briefly describe what Parametricos does?

Sure. Parametricos develops the so-called Studio, a cloud solution to improve the workflow of the AEC professional in all phases of a construction project. The term AEC covers all experts in the architecture, engineering and construction industries.

Could you give us some info on the underlying technology?

Parametricos Studio is a cloud BIM+GIS asset management solution for architectural, engineering and construction professionals that improves their workflow at all stages of the building lifecycle. From planning to facility management to demolition. The Studio provides a cloud-based toolkit that securely stores and visualizes all digital assets and documentation associated with the construction project in a private account. This also includes 3D models and building information modelling. The latter refers to a 3D model with embedded data. With this approach, users can test their architectural proposals and geocoordinate their digital assets on online maps using Geographical Information System (“GIS”) data.

I see. There are already some solutions for workflow improvement. What does the USP see in persuading experts in the field to use your solution?

The fast-paced working environment in the construction industry and the lack of data during a project force most architectural offices to visualize and realize a project in the shortest possible time. This practice arises in isolation, with minimal regard to the environment or community in which the project is located. The studio illustrates the importance of contextualizing a building from the earliest stages of the planning concept through construction to facility management for the remaining life of the project using geospatial data.

Our competitors bring solutions to the market that illustrate and validate the importance of BIM, but have not yet explored cloud BIM with geospatial capabilities like we do. None of our competitors offer embedded online geospatial data.

Software solutions are distributed by many companies as license models. Is that also the case for you or do you use a different business model?

That’s right. We offer a basic package called “Professional” at a fixed price of 49,00 €/month, which includes access to all functions and advantages. The user can add more storage space and team members for an extra charge. Our base prices of €49.00/month win over competitors who charge an average of €63.00/month ($70). The studio, at an affordable and competitive price, scales according to the needs of the user.

Since the registration of the company, we have taken several successful initiatives to create several products and events in line with the main product, the Studio. These products work on awareness issues in our local market in Cyprus and the international market. The marketing campaigns for both products help to increase the traffic for the studio. We have developed a core account and implemented several solutions for our clients, including “find an architect”.

Architectonic is another product supported by us. It is an annual hybrid event in Cyprus, in the world of start-ups and construction with foreign speakers, networking activities and exhibitions.

You just mentioned that your home market is in Cyprus. But you are also internationally active. Can you tell us more about the current market situation and your position in it?

As the future of construction is changing through building information modeling and digital acceptance, BIM’s niche market is becoming increasingly powerful and profitable. According to many market research reports, BIM’s market size will grow to over 11 billion US dollars by 2025.

Based on the characteristics of our product, we place our innovation in the BIM market in the Software segment, which accounts for 59% of this niche market. We therefore aim to achieve a market volume of around USD 6.49 billion by 2025.

Our target customers are professions in the architecture, engineering and construction industries in small and medium-sized enterprises.

Our pilot users are active in several BIM segments. Many of the participants in a construction project want to be involved in more efficient and cost-effective asset management by keeping their projects on time and on budget. For example, engineers and facility managers could use Geo-Location to navigate the information environment in a virtual environment that represents the real world (i.e. the surrounding buildings, bioclimatic, etc.). Architects and engineers, on the other hand, would be interested in shortening planning times, reducing on-site visits and reducing space requirements and waste of materials. With our solution, the client could make better strategic decisions during the entire life cycle of the building.

Since when you operate on the market?

On September 7, 2019, we developed and publicly launched a functional studio platform. We are currently testing and extracting feedback from hand-picked industry experts based on their expertise and application of BIM, its impact on the BIM community worldwide, and their area of work. Pilot users are using the platform on a trial basis with a pre-determined expiration date followed by our billing schedule.

Urban Energy is the Startup of the Week 43: Smart City of tomorrow

The topic of electromobility has become an integral part of current socio-political debates. Although the goal set by the German government in 2010 of having around one million electric cars on German roads by 2020 is far from being reached, the number of newly registered electric vehicles is rising steadily. What should always be borne in mind, is that if many e-cars are connected to the power grid for charging, this can lead to new charging peaks and in the worst case to a grid overload. Our startup of the week, Urban ENERGY, addresses this problem and is developing a cloud to optimize network utilization. In our interview with Managing Director Paul Dittrich, we learn more about their solution.

Hello, Paul! We’re glad you’re here today. We start directly with the first question: How would you present Urban ENERGY in one sentence?

urban ENERGY takes energy management to a new level with AI and optimises network utilisation!

And how exactly do you make the AI usable for these purposes? Feel also free to tell us something about your products and services in this context.

The urban ENERGY Cloud Platform is a modern solution for the integration of cost efficient and highly scalable Smart Grid Analytics in real-time. Data from existing charging stations or energy management solutions can be centrally integrated and reused within milliseconds. In addition to the platform provided as a service (PaaS) for the development of their own use cases, customers also benefit from the Data Analytics function for Smart Grids. The urban ENERGY Cloud platform, which can be operated on-premise, public (e.g. AWS, Azure) or hybrid, provides a highly modular all-in-one solution to operationalize Energy Intelligence in real time using predictive analytics, prescriptive analytics and machine learning.

This sounds very promising, especially with regard to the technologies used. In order to survive on the market in the long run, you still have to prevail against competing companies. Which unique selling proposition do you use to approach this competition?

Yes, there are already major players such as Siemens with heavyweight solutions or providers in certain niches such as charging station or classic energy management for buildings. urban ENERGY fills this gap and takes on the role of an energy broker for the integration of different applications with the aim of making a Smart City as energy- and cost-efficient as possible through artificial intelligence.

How do you integrate your cloud solution and the various services into one business model?

Even before urban ENERGY was founded, we held discussions with potential customer groups for over a year. During this time, we have optimized our business case and developed a license model that is optimal for the customer. A relevant profitability for the customer is already given from 5 charging stations. In addition to charging points, other use cases such as predictive maintenance or predictions of energy quantities are also possible. With adesso AG, a large IT company, and Phoenix Contact, a globally active electrical engineering group, we not only have two investors, but also strategic partners with an extensive sales network. We are currently conducting further talks in the energy and real estate industry.

And where is your target market located?

In addition to municipal utilities, projects are carried out in close cooperation with the relevant real estate companies. urban ENERGY is also becoming increasingly interesting for logistics and commercial companies that want to gradually electrify their vehicle fleets. Supplying several trucks or buses with electricity at the same time will be one of the great challenges of the future that urban ENERGY wants to take on. We are currently concentrating on the German-speaking region, as we are receiving more and more enquiries from public utilities and housing associations who see the challenges in the distribution network and are looking for appropriate solutions here.

Where do you stand at the moment with the development of Urban Energy? Is your cloud platform already usable?

Exactly, the actual IoT cloud platform is already in place. We are currently expanding this Energy Data Hub to include further use cases: e.g. the temporal shifting of loading processes, the prediction of energy quantities from renewable energies. We are therefore currently looking for the first projects to test the urban ENERGY platform and the first use cases. As part of a research project starting in December 2019, we are working over a period of three years together with the city, the municipal utilities and the TU Dortmund as well as the Fraunhofer Institute on a neighbourhood solution.

Dear network member, dear network partner,

1st October 2019: Energieloft becomes Innoloft. A day and a milestone that we have been working towards for a long time. You wonder what moved us to this step? We’d like to share this with you and take you through our startup journey. Let’s first take a look back at the very beginning, the starting point of our journey.

 

How it began

 

Why is progress on the energy transition, one of the greatest challenges of our time, moving so slowly? This was the question we asked ourselves four years ago at the end of 2015. We, the founding team, were in the final stages of our studies and were looking for answers to the big question in our immediate environment. As it turned out, outcomes from many research projects remained locked away in old file cabinets, never reaching implementation in the business world. How could we change this? Our solution: A digital platform that digitizes the transfer of research – “ener.wi – transparente Energiewende” – was born.

We quickly noticed that research and established companies are quite well connected and that interest in our platform was limited. However, we repeatedly received requests from contacts in established companies: “We’re looking for startups with innovative technologies and business models. Do you also have these in your network?”

Since we are a startup ourselves, we were also confronted with the fact that nobody knew us and that finding pilot customers and partners was a big effort. It became very clear to us that young and nameless startups developing highly innovative business models and technologies, are not sufficiently networked. From this problem came Energieloft at the beginning of 2016.

 

From database to network

 

Initially “only” a startup database, we soon came to the conclusion that a database alone does not solve the networking problem sufficiently and that digitisation offers far more options. Thus the development of new, intelligent formats, such as our Startup Speed-Datings or Challenges, led us away from a pure database to a network.

At the same time, more and more companies realized that they needed the innovative power of young, avant-garde companies. Whereas newly founded startups are looking for partnerships with established companies to gain access to customers and resources. For both sides, this means tangible win-win advantages. Both newcomers and established companies benefit from cooperation. Since then, more and more startups and established companies from the energy sector in Germany joined our network and came together via our platform, our formats and our projects in the field of business model development. A success of which we are quite proud of.

 

Industry convergence and internationalisation meets Energieloft

 

In recent years, established companies in the energy sector have been pivoting more and more to new sectors and looking for new business fields as part of their innovation activities. As a result, we kept being asked more and more often whether we as Energieloft also addressed new topics such as mobility, smart city or industry 4.0. Slightly irritated, we always replied: “Yes, of course! We are an innovation network.” This gave us the impression that even the name “Energieloft” might not be the best choice for the established energy sector.

At the same time, not only did we want to accelerate innovations abroad with our network, but the startups in our network also signalled the interest in networking abroad. When we began to stumble across the name “Energyloft” with our first partners and customers abroad, we thought to ourselves: “Hmm, that’s actually not our name, it’s not how you write it”.

Not only the experiences described above, but also the realization that global and cross-sectional innovations are necessary to solve the social and economic challenges of our time. This led us a while ago to the conclusion that Energieloft must become Innoloft.

And here we are: Innoloft.

Since 2015 we have been accelerating innovations in the areas of energy, mobility and smart cities as well as in related areas such as IT, industry 4.0 and financing. The ENERGIELOFT database is the heart of our innovation ecosystem. It supports the screening of the market, scouting of applications, analysis of new product concepts as well as the development of business sectors on the basis of new technologies and business models.

Carefully structured according to individual technology segments, the database provides you access to relevant information. With the relaunch, content that is relevant to you will now be displayed in a personalized feed. We will inform you in real time about current solutions from startups, requests and news that interest you.

You can use the new request function to submit your own requests and thus find suitable investors or products and solutions. Our new Live Matching function simplifies the contact process. You get quick and easy access to matching contacts. In addition, we have integrated a variety of other intelligent support systems into our digital innovation ecosystem.

Take off together with METRO as pilot customer

Together with METRO we started a new Challenge. Now we are looking for startups with innovative ideas who wants to bring them to market together with METRO. You can apply for it until July 23rd 2019 with your cooperation idea at METRO, a leading international specialist for wholesale and food retailing.

You can win METRO as a pilot customer for your paid innovation projects. METRO turnover was 37 billioon Euro in 2017 / 18. More then 150.000 employees work for METRO worldwide.

We are looking for digital solutions for the METRO Stores in the following areas decentralised power generation and storage, IoT networked buildings, energy-efficient buildings as well as innovation ideas for METRO customers in the restaurant sector.

As part of its digitization strategy, METRO wants to invest in new innovative solutions – products, business models, process improvements.

Procedure

ENERGIELOFT supports METRO in the selection of suitable ideas. You submit these to us. If your cooperation ideas are short-listed, you can spend half a day with a METRO employee at the company headquarters in Düsseldorf. There you will discuss your idea personally. Afterwards you will present it to a panel of experts. Once you’ve convinced them of your cooperation idea, you’ll start the paid pilot project together with METRO. If the implementation is successful, you can look forward to a long-term cooperation with METRO.

How start-ups use digital solutions to build bridges between the energy and housing industries.

40 percent of our total energy consumption is accounted for by residential and commercial buildings. But the new EU directive on the energy efficiency of buildings must be implemented by 2050. By then, all buildings in Europe will be low-energy buildings. There is still a lot to be done by then. Because to achieve this, not only insulation and more energy efficiency in buildings are needed. It also requires the use of renewable energy for energy supply, the installation of charging points for electric cars and the use of digital building and energy management solutions for combined use.

All this can be combined in one “Smart Building”. However, smart building solutions are also bringing the energy and housing industries closer together. In networked buildings, for example, data can be generated, analyzed and evaluated using built-in sensors. The data allows information to be obtained and processed more quickly. They map energy consumption, occupant behaviour and the operating status of technical equipment and systems in buildings. With the integration of additional data, analyses and forecasts are possible that help to maintain buildings. In addition to energy services, this results in new business and service options for the real estate and housing industry.

They develop the infrastructure for smart buildings on the basis of big data, artificial intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), digital twins and other technical solutions. The following eight selected case studies show you which solutions Startups use to build hinges for the energy and housing industries.

KUGU Home GmbH – Business opener for new business fields in the housing industry 

The Berlin-based start-up KUGU is developing a digital toolbox for real estate. With their solutions, building technology and services can be digitized. For the housing industry, KUGU opens up new business fields and gives the opportunity to offer independent services such as heating and water cost accounting. On the way, residents gain transparent insights into their energy consumption and are encouraged to save energy.

Lemonbeat GmbH – Platform generalist for IoT applications

The Dortmund-based start-up Lemonbeat is creating a communications infrastructure for IoT applications that can be used both for industry and for the energy and real estate sectors. Your IoT Communication Backbone is the backbone for various IoT communication solutions. With the IoT operating system Lemonbeat OS™, Lemonbeat provides all software modules (services) required for the desired application. Thus Lemonbeat enables lean building automation in the area of Smart Building, as well as energy efficiency, security and comfort, which is also worthwhile for use in existing properties. As technology providers, they are anxious to reduce system development costs through standardization.

Rockethome GmbH – Provider of a digital service platform for networked living

“Everything from one source and on one service platform” is the promise of the Cologne-based start-up Rockethome. With their IoT platform, they create use cases in a wide variety of areas. Rockethome specializes in integrated IoT solutions for device control and automation, but also for monitoring and optimizing energy flows in buildings through decentralized energy management, real-time monitoring for security systems, tenant portals, tenant flows or intelligent charging management for electric vehicles.

Rysta GmbH – Protects building fabric and creates a good indoor climate

Sensor technology combined with intelligent algorithms involving users, with this hardware and software solution, the Berlin start-up Rysta supports the housing industry. With the Rysta Schimmel Guard solution, Rysta has developed a tool that analyzes indoor air, prepares data and makes it available via a portal. This helps to improve the indoor climate and to avoid mould growth in both new and existing buildings. Thus they protect the health of the inhabitants just like the building fabric of buildings.

ESENTA GmbH – Digitalized key for building access

Esenta, a start-up company based in Kappelrodeck in Baden-Württemberg, Germany, uses its digital solution to give visitors access to buildings via smartphone. Visitors can use an authentication procedure to enter a building for a certain period of time. Control is possible from a distance. Esentas access and communication solution is a smart home application that can be used for various applications.

METR GmbH – IoT infrastructure for the management of residential real estate

With its multifunctional gateway, the Berlin-based start-up METR provides the basis for a manufacturer-independent, secure and universally applicable IoT infrastructure in networked buildings. METR focuses on the housing industry and prepares applications for housing associations and administrators based on digital solutions. These include, for example, networked smoke detectors, submetering, intelligent heating control and other services. With its hardware platform, METR creates the prerequisites for interconnectivity and the bundling of the various digital products and services.

vilisto – Self-learning radiator thermostats for smart non-residential buildings

The KI-based, self-learning and fully automatic radiator thermostat of the Hamburg start-up vilisto ensures a demand-oriented and efficient heat supply in office and commercial buildings. It uses room and presence sensors, integrates weather data and decodes the usage behaviour as well as various building parameters individually for each room. This has been proven to achieve energy savings of up to 32 percent. Vilisto’s self-learning system consists of the radiator thermostat ovis and an intelligent gateway shepherd.

Solarimo GmbH – Tenant flow from solar systems for rental properties

As a full-service provider, the Berlin start-up Solarimo plans and implements tenant power projects on the roofs of rental properties. But the start-up is not only active as a planner and project planner of PV systems. In fact, Solarimo takes care of all aspects of operation, maintenance and service. They sell the generated electricity to the tenants of residential buildings who draw their electricity directly from the roof of the residential building. Investors and property owners also benefit from the increased attractiveness of the buildings and from participation options. Solarimo is thus bringing about the energy revolution in cities by exploiting the potential of roof areas for solar power generation.
